When it comes to carpets, there’s no better-known face in Mexborough than Jeff Banks.
It’s no wonder – Jeff’s a Mexborough lad, and he has been in the carpet business for 20 years. And that’s why he’s delighted to be opening his brand-new store in Rowms Lane this weekend.
“It’s good for the town, because it’s a thriving business and we’re opening with some amazing deals for customers, and it’s good for me as a local lad,” he said.
The new store replaces the old one, which was just around the corner on the riverside site that is being redeveloped as apartments.
“It’s given us a great chance to move bright new premises where we can show our customers all the fantastic new ranges we have coming in for Spring and Summer, and also help them find their traditional favourites,” said Jeff.
It’s a bit of a new start for Jeff, too – he started with United Carpets as a salesman in 1991 after a career in engineering, and rose to be area brand manager. But he was always interested in building up business in his home town, and when the chance came up to be United Carpet’s franchisee in Mexborough, he jumped at the chance.
Carpets are certainly in his family’s blood – Jeff’s daughter Natalie works for United Carpets in Sheffield, and would one day like to have a franchise like her dad.
“I thought taking on the franchise to run the store was a great opportunity to be in business for myself – and because I know the town so well, I was sure I could hit the mark with what people want and need,” he said.
That was in August, and the store has gone from strength to strength – Jeff already employs four staff, but hopes to expand that soon.
“We carry a wide range of stock because our customers have differing tastes,” he said.
“We have customers who like traditional carpets - maybe people who are retiring to a new bungalow and want to carpet the whole place – but we also have a lot of young couples and families who like to be very contemporary.
“Whatever their tastes, though, everybody wants good value for money, which is absolutely what we concentrate on – to celebrate our opening, we’ve going to have some never-to-be repeated deals that will really get people talking.”
In 20 years in the carpet business, Jeff – who still lives in Mexborough - has seen plenty of changes in flooring fashion.
“I think people have far more idea now about what looks good in their home,” he said. “It’s probably because of TV programmes such as 60 Second Makeover, and homes magazines.
“Twenty years ago, people would come in for a carpet that would last them years and years, but now customers are much more likely to change their carpets more frequently to get a fresh new look. And of course, our carpets are very reasonably priced, so they can afford to do that.”
He’s got high hopes for the new store. “United Carpets is a superb well-known brand that people recognise for combining good quality with excellent price deals,” he said. “Everybody knows me, and they know I’ll give them the best deals.
“At our new store, we’ll have the latest ranges on show, and because we insist on giving good customer service, our customers know they will get a friendly, down-to-earth reception, helpful advice and no hard sell.
