Carpets

With a huge range of styles and colours, selecting the right carpet to match your needs can be tricky. That’s why United Carpets and Beds have one of the widest choices available, and not just that ,our helpful staff will endeavor to guide you to the right carpet for you, every step of the way.

Below is an overview of all the different types of carpets – the fibers used, different styles and the how to keep your carpet looking great for longer.

All our carpets are made from one of or a blend of three main fibres –Wool, Polypropylene and Polyamide. The choice is up to you and the decision normally comes down to what you are trying to achieve, whether you want a stylish aesthetically pleasing carpet, a practical hardwearing carpet or one that is stain resistant.  In order to help you make your decision we have listed the main benefits of each fibre below:

Wool

Wool is a traditional material that has been used for thousands of years to provide a complex fibre to be used in carpets. There are many benefits of wool carpet over synthetics. Wool is very resilient and its texture allows it to very quickly recover from crushing or indenting caused by footsteps or furniture. This natural resilience also keeps the carpet looking new and fresh for longer periods of time. Wool has a natural ability to resist staining and soiling.

Wool is very durable and will last for many years without showing signs of wear. Surprisingly wool carpet only costs slightly more than synthetic fibres and is a wise choice.  Man has used wool to keep warm for centuries, these properties also transfer when wool is made into carpet so not only does it give a warming look to any room it is also a great insulator to keep your room warm. Wool is often mixed with other materials such as polypropylene to make it even more hardwearing.

Polypropylene

This is the most popular carpet fibre due to its resistance to stains. Many of United Carpets polypropylene carpets are even part bleach cleanable making it a great choice if you have children who struggle keeping their crayons on the paper. Polypropylene carpets are great value for money due to their durability and hardwearing properties.

Polyamide

This is the hardest wearing synthetic fibre meaning it retains its look for much longer than other man made fibres. Its durability and resilience are what make this carpet an excellent choice.

The type of carpet you choose is the hardest decision, here are brief descriptions on all the different types sold at United Carpets and Beds:

Twist Pile

Created by tightly twisting yarn together, this is currently the UK’s most popular choice. Twists are available in plain and flecked colours made by combining yarns with complimenting shades. This type of carpet is practical and stylish and would look great in any room, an all round winner when choosing your carpet.

Velvet Pile

This type of carpet is very elegant and smooth with cut pile finish. This carpet is extremely low maintenance and gives a sense of luxury to any room.

Shag Pile

This throwback to the 70’s is becoming a popular choice once again due to its luxurious appearance and feel. Shag pile is made in the same way as a cut pile however its appearance is so due its extra long tufts for that super shaggy look.

Berber

These extremely hardwearing and versatile carpets are exceptional at maintaining their appearance. Berbers have the added advantage of offering texture to flooring, which many plain carpets do not. Made with heavy and wide yarn looped in uniform or differing heights to create a textured pile.

Saxony

A Saxony is a cut pile carpet made with long tufts for a soft feel. Deep and luxurious this carpet is soft to the touch. Comprised of twisted, cut pile tufts having uniform appearance. This carpet isn’t recommended for areas of high traffic as the nature of the pile can show footprints. It’s perfect for bedrooms and sitting rooms.

Cut and Loop

This carpet is as simple as it sounds, made with both cut pile and loop pile this carpet gives texture to any room.

Flatweave

Made with interlocking threads this carpet has a shallow pile. Although the pile is loop there is no height which means it shows no sign of flattening.

Wilton

A rich quality woven carpet normally in traditional regal styles using many colours. Wilton’s have a continuous yarn strand woven all the way through. A great way to add a touch of class without splashing a lot of cash.

Laminate

Many of our laminates encase the feel and look of real wood, which is why they are such a popular choice. There are many benefits to laminate over real wood, the main being its low maintenance, extreme durability, child friendly and cost. At United Carpets and Beds we have beautiful laminates to suit any style and budget.

Laminate is made by laying a sheet of decorative material over a synthetic base. Many of our laminates benefit from V-groove technology to add extra authenticity and some are even hand scrapped to give it the feel of real wood. Laminate is a great way of giving your room a look and feel without costing the earth. Suitable for any room.
