FAQs

Underlay is an extra layer that goes underneath the carpet, protecting the carpet, providing insulation and extra comfort underfoot.

Underlay is essential when buying a new carpet. Often overlooked in favour of the old underlay before it, which is prone to crumble or collapse, especially in high traffic areas. A new underlay will ensure your carpet stays comfortable and stable for years to come.

Although the extra under-foot comfort is a welcome benefit of underlay, its main purpose is to protect your carpet during its everyday use. By absorbing some of the impact of footfall, quality underlay can prevent pile flattening and extend the lifetime of your new carpet by up to 50%.
Yes, we can uplift your old carpet for an additional fee in some areas. Please speak to your local in-store expert about the services offered in your area.
A ‘tog’ is the unit of measurement we use to show a flooring product thermal insulating property. The higher the carpet tog value, the more it will retain heat and the better it will be at insulating.

Tog is very important in the flooring world depending on your needs – higher will help insulate a home better, but lower tog will work better with underfloor heating. The overall tog value of a chosen flooring option will also include the underlay.

The general guidance for replacing carpeting is 5 to 15 years, however, a carpet’s longevity depends on a number of things. Pets, children, amount of foot traffic, and material, among other factors, can all affect the lifespan of your carpet. Make sure to choose a carpet that suits the room of choice and your lifestyle, and don’t forget a suitable underlay. Learn more in our handy carpet buying guide.
We'd always recommend using our FREE Home Measure and estimate service, where our experts will come to your home and measure your space. However, if you would like to measure your own room, you can do so in a few easy steps.

First, draw an outline of your room's floor shape. While the drawing does not need to be perfect, the measurements you collect do need to be accurate. Using a tape measure, measure in cm and metres each side/straight line in your room and add them to your room drawing. Add an additional 10cm to each to ensure you have some spare for a good final fit. Measure your room from the longest and widest points. Finally, use your measurements to calculate the total width and length of carpet needed.

We have a full step-by-step guide for how to measure your carpet complete with diagrams and how to calculate. Alternatively, book a home visit by one of our team to help you measure up for your new carpet!

Gel Backed Carpet FAQ's

A gel-backed carpet features a layer of gel material attached to the back of the carpet.

This gel backing provides extra cushioning which makes the carpet more comfortable to walk on while also enhancing its durability.

This carpet is great for common areas in your home where people frequently walk through because the gel backing helps the carpet maintain its shape and improves its durability.

The gel layer also makes the carpet easier to install directly onto the floor without the need for underlay.

Yes, gel-backed carpets are good for the following reasons:

Durability: Gel-backed carpets are known for their durability, handling high foot traffic well and maintaining their appearance over time.
Comfort: The gel backing adds a layer of cushioning, which provides a comfortable underfoot feel.
Easy to Install: These carpets can be installed directly on the floor without the need for underlay.

Water Resistance: The gel backing often has water-resistant properties, which makes these carpets a practical choice for areas prone to spills or moisture.

Yes, polypropylene gel-backed carpet is waterproof. The gel layer on the back of the carpet prevents water from penetrating to the floor underneath, making it an excellent choice for areas like kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is a concern.

You can use underlay with gel-backed carpet, but it’s not necessary. This is because the carpet’s gel backing can stick well to the floor on its own.

The best kind of carpet backing depends on the requirements of the area where your carpet will be installed.

For high-traffic areas: Gel-backed or rubber-backed carpets are ideal as they are durable and often water-resistant.
For luxury and comfort: Jute or woven backings provide a softer feel, making them perfect for living rooms and bedrooms.
For moisture-prone areas: Waterproof backings like gel are best as they prevent water damage and mould growth.

For ease of installation and versatility: Felt back carpets can be installed with or without underlay and offer a balance of comfort and stability.
