FAQs

  • Underlay is an extra layer that goes underneath the carpet, protecting the carpet, providing insulation and extra comfort underfoot.

Underlay is essential when buying a new carpet. Often overlooked in favour of the old underlay before it, which is prone to crumble or collapse, especially in high traffic areas. A new underlay will ensure your carpet stays comfortable and stable for years to come.

Although the extra under-foot comfort is a welcome benefit of underlay, its main purpose is to protect your carpet during its everyday use. By absorbing some of the impact of footfall, quality underlay can prevent pile flattening and extend the lifetime of your new carpet by up to 50%.

  • Yes, we can uplift your old carpet for an additional fee in some areas. Please speak to your local in-store expert about the services offered in your area.

  • A ‘tog’ is the unit of measurement we use to show a flooring product thermal insulating property.  The higher the carpet tog value, the more it will retain heat and the better it will be at insulating.

Tog is very important in the flooring world depending on your needs – higher will help insulate a home better, but lower tog will work better with underfloor heating.  The overall tog value of a chosen flooring option will also include the underlay.

  • The general guidance for replacing carpeting is 5 to 15 years, however, a carpet’s longevity depends on a number of things. Pets, children, amount of foot traffic, and material, among other factors, can all affect the lifespan of your carpet. Make sure to choose a carpet that suits the room of choice and your lifestyle, and don’t forget a suitable underlay. Learn more in our handy carpet buying guide.

  • We'd always recommend using our FREE Home Measure and estimate service, where our experts will come to your home and measure your space. However, if you would like to measure your own room, you can do so in a few easy steps.

First, draw an outline of your room's floor shape. While the drawing does not need to be perfect, the measurements you collect do need to be accurate. Using a tape measure,  measure in cm and metres each side/straight line in your room and add them to your room drawing. Add an additional 10cm to each to ensure you have some spare for a good final fit.  Measure your room from the longest and widest points. Finally, use your measurements to calculate the total width and length of carpet needed.

We have a full step-by-step guide for how to measure your carpet complete with diagrams and how to calculate. Alternatively, book a home visit by one of our team to help you measure up for your new carpet!

  • You want to keep your new carpeting looking great, but they are walked on every day and sometimes need a clean. First things first, you need to make sure you clear the room and give it a good hoovering to pick up any loose materials. Any stains need to be addressed. Many of our carpets are stain-resistant and pet-friendly, however, stains still need to be dealt with. How to clean a stain on your carpet depends on what caused it. Check out our Knowledge Hub articles to find detailed tips for getting different stains out of carpets.

  • Of course! If you're looking for a detailed online quote for how much your new flooring will cost, head to the product page of the particular floor you're interested in. Click the generate a quote button once you have filled out your measurements and a form will pop up for you to complete.

We will ask you additional questions such as if you require fitting, your room type or if you need a free measure.

Then someone from your local store will email you back a quote within 24 hours. You are then free to give them a call or pop into the store to discuss your quote at your own convenience.

FAQs

We always recommend starting at the top of the stairs.

Measure the top step tread (the part you stand on) and then add the vertical part of that same step. Add the two measurements together (remembering that you should always measure in cm and metres). This is one step. Then add the number of steps you have to the bottom and multiply your first number by the number of steps you have.

Example: 25cm tread + 25cm vertical section = 50cm. 10 steps. 10 x 50cm = 500 cm.

Add a minimum of 10cm (4 inches) to the total length to allow for any waste.  .

You add this separately because if you speak to one of our team, they can adjust this figure if they think 5cm is not enough or too much extra and the figures you provide will be the exact stair measurements.

Finally, measure the width of your stair carpet by using your tape measure across the top step and bottom step to make sure they are the same width (variance can be seen on older stairs, and you want to make sure you have the widest point). Add a minimum of 5cm (2 inches) to the total width, again to allow for waste.

But don’t forget - your in store experts will be happy to come and measure your stairs for you with our Free Home Measure and Estimate service. We’d always recommend that you let a professional fit your carpet, and with United Carpets and Beds you can get FREE Fitting with all our carpets when you buy the equivalent size Airstep Underlay (stair surcharges apply). There are some steps you should take before your carpet is fitted to ensure it is as swift as possible.
  1. Clear the room: make sure all furniture has been removed and any ornaments on mounted shelves etc. are also removed. The clearer the room, the quicker the fitting.
  2. Arrange the fitting: Choose a convenient time of the day for you. Try to be there, if you can. Otherwise try to have someone you trust, just to oversee the job.

  1. Remove the old carpet if necessary
    1. Vacuum the old carpet to cut down on dust
    2. Use a pair of pliers to pull up the edge of the carpet, near any wall.
    3. Use a utility knife to slice the carpet into manageable strips
    4. Pull up the underlay with the carpet if you can. It may be stapled, but can be easily removed.
    5. Roll the carpet as you go along
    6. Place the rolled carpet out of the room
  2. Clean the floor with a vacuum or brush in order to remove any leftover debris

Your local store will be able to organise expert carpet fitting in your area.
